Nik Hagman is leading a Finnish team that has been impressive thus far. While there was some worry that the 2 concusions he suffered during the NHL season may have set him back this tournament is disproving that theory.

Leaf 2006 draft pick Leo Komarov is seeing limited action at the 2009 World Championship for Finland, but is playing a strong defensive game and getting under the skin of opponents while gaining some highly valued experience against NHL level talent.

Leaf 2007 draft pick Carl Gunnarsson has only played 1 game thus far at the 2009 World Hockey Championship and has been unimpressive. However, he is learning that the NHL level talent is higher than that which he sees in the Swedish Elite League.

Jason Blake joins Leaf coach Ron Wilson and GM Brian Burke with team USA where thus far he has played well. Blake has also been placed in a leadership role with a young team by coach Wilson as he was named an alternate captian.

Also joining Coach Wilson and GM Burke with team USA is disappointing trade acquisition, Lee Stempniak who thus far has been mediocre on an American team that has a lot of good young forwards.

LEAFSREBUILDTRACKER.COM has assembled a list of Leaf year end awards based on their NHL counterparts. In each case the winning player is the Leaf judged most qualified to win the award from all the players on the 2008-2009 Leaf team. The Leaf players winning the LRT awards are by no means expected to win the corresponding NHL awards at the end of the season.
Select an award from the list above to see the 2008-2009 Leaf winner and runner-ups as well as LRT's 2009-2010 projected Leaf winner of that award.
Nik Hagman tallied 22 goals and 20 assists for 42 points in just 65 games in 2008-2009. Hagman was noticable on every shift and helped tutor the younger Leaf forwards such as Nikolai Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski.

Jason Blake led all Leaf players in total points in the 2008-2009 season with 63. Blake has traditionally been a shoot first pass second player, but this year he set a carrer high in assists with 38 to go along with his 25 goals.

Jason Blake scored 25 goals to lead the Leafs in the 2008-2009 season. This year was a comeback season for Blake after a disappointing first season with the Leafs in 2007-2008 that saw the one time 40 goal scorer amass only 15 goals.

Pavel Kubina led all Leaf defensemen with 40 points in the 2008-2009 season. Kubina played on both the Power Play and Penalty Kill units, leading the team in Power Play goals. While his plus/minus was not impressive that was the case for the entire Leaf team.

Vesa Toskala wins this trophy based soley on the fact that of all the bad goaltenders the Leafs have gone through this season, he was the best. Toskala played through an injury most of the seaon before undergoing surgery at the beginning of March. Toskala posted a 22- 17-11 record with a 3.26 GAA in 2008-2009.

Luke Schenn had an impressive rookie campaign for the Leafs. The defenseman led the team in hits despite missing 12 games due to an injury. Schenn also averaged over 20 minutes of ice time a game and pitched in offensively with 2 goals and 12 assists.

Matt Stajan had his best season offensively putting up 15 goals and 40 assists while continuing his strong defensive play. Stajan was a penalty killing forward and the team's go-to faceoff man. Stajan also led all Leaf forwards in hits in 2008-2009 with 114.

Ian White was all but written off at the start of the 2008-2009 season. White was 9th on the Leaf depth chart for defensemen and sat in the press box for the first 11 games of the season. White first cracked the lineup as a forward before eventuially returning to defense putting up 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points.

Nik Hagman put up 42 points over 65 games while playing a hard, gritty game. Despite his hard play style Hagman only tallied 4 minutes in penalties in 2008-2009 and if not for suffering 2 concusions, Hagman most likely would have led the team in scoring.

The following rookies have played in at least 5 games for the Leafs this season and are were all under the age of 25 at the start of the season.

This LEAFSREBUILDTRACKER.COM was created by an impassioned Maple Leaf fan by the name of Owen Wooding who after 25 years of watching the team continually make the same mistakes over and over again finally saw the first sign of the Leafs changing their team building philosophy. Mr. Wooding continues to be the driving force behind the site by way of content, site design as well as maintenance, and encourages informed comments and suggesstions from fellow Leaf fans.
While some less informed types would suggest that any team that is not winning is rebuilding and hence the Leafs have been rebuilding since 1967, those with an actual understanding of such things know that is simply not true. As far as LEAFSREBUILDTRACKER.COM is concerned the rebuilding process began Jan 22, 2008 with the dismissal of John Ferguson and the hiring of Cliff Fletcher and continues on under Brian Burke.
The goal of this site is to hold Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) accountable regarding their commitment to rebuild the franchise. This site will track and evaluate all of the Maple Leaf transactions (signings, trades, draft picks, front office changes, etc) from a rebuilding standpoint.
When Leaf Management makes a move that does not appear to be in the best interest of rebuilding the team and instead seems to be falling back on the old habits of plugging holes with veteran players to finish in the middle of the pack, we will call them on it. We will explain the issues with such moves to Leafs Nation without smoke and mirrors of false hope to disguise the greed of MLSE shareholders as we've seen in the past.
While there is no official time table in place for the rebuilding process we do know that Brian Burke received a 6 year contract to run the hockey operations which expires at the end of the 2014-2015 season. When lumped together with the year that Cliff Fletcher spent as Leaf's GM that makes 7 years. Most GM's come in with a "5 year plan" however we know that the Leafs have very little in the way of promising young talent or prospects and are almost the equivalent of an expansion franchise from that standpoint. As a result we think it fair to expect the team to be challenging for a playoff spot by the 2011-2012 season (4 years mark), be challenging for a top 4 spot in the conference by 2014-2015 (6 year mark) and be among the top 3 teams in the league by 2016-2017 (8 year mark). These are very conservative expectations to give the Leafs ample time to get their house in order. If however the team makes faster progress while sticking to the rebuilding plan that would be wonderful. Keeping Leaf Management and Leaf fans patient during that time may be the most difficult part of the rebuilding process and we will endeavour to help in that respect.
