Nik Hagman is leading a Finnish team that has been impressive thus far. While there was some worry that the 2 concusions he suffered during the NHL season may have set him back this tournament is disproving that theory.

Leaf 2006 draft pick Leo Komarov is seeing limited action at the 2009 World Championship for Finland, but is playing a strong defensive game and getting under the skin of opponents while gaining some highly valued experience against NHL level talent.

LRT'S 2008-2009 LEAF LADY BYNG TROPHY WINNER

LEAFSREBUILDTRACKER.COM has assembled a list of Leaf year end awards based on their NHL counterparts. In each case the winning player is the Leaf judged most qualified to win the award from all the players on the 2008-2009 Leaf team. The Leaf players winning the LRT awards are by no means expected to win the corresponding NHL awards at the end of the season.

Select an award from the list above to see the 2008-2009 Leaf winner and runner-ups as well as LRT's 2009-2010 projected Leaf winner of that award.
LRT'S LEAF HART TROPHY

Nik Hagman tallied 22 goals and 20 assists for 42 points in just 65 games in 2008-2009. Hagman was noticable on every shift and helped tutor the younger Leaf forwards such as Nikolai Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski.

Nik Hagman
The NHL's Hart Trophy is awarded to the player judged to be the most valuable to his team during the regular season. Players in consideration this year include Evgeni Malkin & Alex Ovechkin.
Mikhail Grabovski
If Grabovski continues to produce & improve in his own zone he may be the little engine that makes the Leafs go in 2009-2010.
Ian White
Jason Blake

63 PTS
LRT'S LEAF ART ROSS TROPHY

Jason Blake led all Leaf players in total points in the 2008-2009 season with 63. Blake has traditionally been a shoot first pass second player, but this year he set a carrer high in assists with 38 to go along with his 25 goals.

Jason Blake
The NHL's Art Ross Trophy is awarded to the player who finishses the regular season with the most total points (goals and assists). The 2008-2009 NHL points leader was Evgeni Malkin with 113 points.
Mikhail Grabovski
If Grabovski can continue to develop & avoid the slumps he saw in his rookie season, LRT predicts a 65-70 point season for the centre.
Alex Ponikarovsky
Matt Stajan
61 PTS
55 PTS
LRT'S LEAF ROCKET RICHARD TROPHY

Jason Blake scored 25 goals to lead the Leafs in the 2008-2009 season. This year was a comeback season for Blake after a disappointing first season with the Leafs in 2007-2008 that saw the one time 40 goal scorer amass only 15 goals.

Jason Blake
The NHL's Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy is awarded to the player who scores the most goals during the regular season. The 2008-2009 NHL leading goal scorer was Alex Ovechkin with 56.
Nikolai Kulemin
With 15 goals in his rookie season, LRT sees a breakout year for Kulemin. Look for Kulemin to net around 25-30 goals in 2009-2010.
Alex Ponikarovsky
Nik Hagman

LRT'S LEAF NORRIS TROPHY

Pavel Kubina led all Leaf defensemen with 40 points in the 2008-2009 season. Kubina played on both the Power Play and Penalty Kill units, leading the team in Power Play goals. While his plus/minus was not impressive that was the case for the entire Leaf team.

Pavel Kubina
The NHL's Norris Trophy is awarded to the defenseman who demonstrates the best all-round ability in his position. Canidates for this season should include Zdeno Chara and Mike Green.
Luke Schenn
After an impressive rookie campaign, LRT expects Schenn to improve his offense enough next year to be the team's top D-man.
Ian White
Tomas Kaberle
26 PTS
31 PTS
LRT'S LEAF VEZINA TROPHY

Vesa Toskala wins this trophy based soley on the fact that of all the bad goaltenders the Leafs have gone through this season, he was the best. Toskala played through an injury most of the seaon before undergoing surgery at the beginning of March. Toskala posted a 22- 17-11 record with a 3.26 GAA in 2008-2009.

Toskala
The NHL's Vezina Trophy is awarded to the goaltender adjudged to be the best at this position. The 2008-2009 candidates for the NHL honour include Tim Thomas, Steve Mason and Roberto Luongo.
Vesa Toskala
It is likely that Vesa Toskala will again carry the load for the Leafs next season, at least until the trade deadline.
Martin Gerber
Curtis Joseph
10-14-1
5-9-1
LRT'S LEAF CALDER TROPHY

Luke Schenn had an impressive rookie campaign for the Leafs. The defenseman led the team in hits despite missing 12 games due to an injury. Schenn also averaged over 20 minutes of ice time a game and pitched in offensively with 2 goals and 12 assists.

Luke Schenn
The NHL's Calder Trophy is awarded to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition. This year's candidates include Steve Mason, Bobby Ryan and Pekka Rinne
Jiri Tlusty
Jiri Tlusty has shown a lot of promise at the AHL level this season and next season will likely find himself on one of the top two Leaf lines.
Mikhail Grabovski
Nikolai Kulemin

31 PTS
LRT'S LEAF SELKE TROPHY

Matt Stajan had his best season offensively putting up 15 goals and 40 assists while continuing his strong defensive play. Stajan was a penalty killing forward and the team's go-to faceoff man. Stajan also led all Leaf forwards in hits in 2008-2009 with 114.

Matt Stajan
The NHL's Selke Trophy is awarded to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game. Players in consideration for this seaon's award include Pavel Datsuyk, David Krejci and Mike Richards.
Matt Stajan
The Leafs lack any real defensive forwards outside of Stajan. Unless an off-season acquisition is made Stajan will take this honour again.
Jason Blake
Alex Ponikarovsky

LRT'S LEAF MASTERTON TROPHY

Ian White was all but written off at the start of the 2008-2009 season. White was 9th on the Leaf depth chart for defensemen and sat in the press box for the first 11 games of the season. White first cracked the lineup as a forward before eventuially returning to defense putting up 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points.

Ian White
The NHL's Masterton Trophy is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
Mike Van Ryn
Van Ryn suffered another injury plagued season in '08-'09 & if he can play 70+ games productively in '09-'10 he should win here.
Jason Blake
John Mitchell
63 PTS
29 PTS
LRT'S LEAF LADY BYNG TROPHY

Nik Hagman put up 42 points over 65 games while playing a hard, gritty game. Despite his hard play style Hagman only tallied 4 minutes in penalties in 2008-2009 and if not for suffering 2 concusions, Hagman most likely would have led the team in scoring.

Nik Hagman
The NHL's Lady Byng Trophy is awarded to player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.
Nikolai Kulemin
A year's worth of NHL officiating combined with improved level of play should result in a win in this category for Kulemin.

About leafsrebuildtracker.com

SIX DEGREES OF LEAFSREBUILDTRACKER.COM

WHO ARE WE?

This LEAFSREBUILDTRACKER.COM was created by an impassioned Maple Leaf fan by the name of Owen Wooding who after 25 years of watching the team continually make the same mistakes over and over again finally saw the first sign of the Leafs changing their team building philosophy. Mr. Wooding continues to be the driving force behind the site by way of content, site design as well as maintenance, and encourages informed comments and suggesstions from fellow Leaf fans.

WHAT ARE WE?

While some less informed types would suggest that any team that is not winning is rebuilding and hence the Leafs have been rebuilding since 1967, those with an actual understanding of such things know that is simply not true. As far as LEAFSREBUILDTRACKER.COM is concerned the rebuilding process began Jan 22, 2008 with the dismissal of John Ferguson and the hiring of Cliff Fletcher and continues on under Brian Burke.

WHY HAVE A SITE LIKE THIS?

The goal of this site is to hold Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) accountable regarding their commitment to rebuild the franchise. This site will track and evaluate all of the Maple Leaf transactions (signings, trades, draft picks, front office changes, etc) from a rebuilding standpoint.

HOW WILL WE DO IT?

When Leaf Management makes a move that does not appear to be in the best interest of rebuilding the team and instead seems to be falling back on the old habits of plugging holes with veteran players to finish in the middle of the pack, we will call them on it. We will explain the issues with such moves to Leafs Nation without smoke and mirrors of false hope to disguise the greed of MLSE shareholders as we've seen in the past.

WHEN WILL THE REBUILD BE OVER?

While there is no official time table in place for the rebuilding process we do know that Brian Burke received a 6 year contract to run the hockey operations which expires at the end of the 2014-2015 season. When lumped together with the year that Cliff Fletcher spent as Leaf's GM that makes 7 years. Most GM's come in with a "5 year plan" however we know that the Leafs have very little in the way of promising young talent or prospects and are almost the equivalent of an expansion franchise from that standpoint. As a result we think it fair to expect the team to be challenging for a playoff spot by the 2011-2012 season (4 years mark), be challenging for a top 4 spot in the conference by 2014-2015 (6 year mark) and be among the top 3 teams in the league by 2016-2017 (8 year mark). These are very conservative expectations to give the Leafs ample time to get their house in order. If however the team makes faster progress while sticking to the rebuilding plan that would be wonderful. Keeping Leaf Management and Leaf fans patient during that time may be the most difficult part of the rebuilding process and we will endeavour to help in that respect.

WHERE CAN YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THE REBUILD PROCESS?

For all Leaf rebuild information just bookmark LEAFSREBUILDTRACKER.COM to keep yourself informed about the rebuilding process and help us help you, the Leaf fan, hold MLSE accountable during this process.
