PLEASE NOTE
The projected target lists are groups of players that LRT thinks the Leafs will attempt to sign. In some cases they may only look at one player if they cannot sign another. We do not think or expect the team to sign every player on the list and nor should Leaf fans.

THE LRT UFA LIST
This listing contains all the Unrestricted Free Agents under the age of 30 that LRT deems notable from a Leaf perspective and who are as of yet unsigned by their clubs. Those free agents above the age of 30 do not appear as they should not be looked at by a rebuilding team unless they are being acquired for the sole purpose of being an asset to move at the trade deadline of that season for draft picks or prospects.
These listings will be updated as players are signed so check back here to keep upto date on all the upcoming free agent frenzy.

2010 FREE AGENT CLASS ANALYSIS
Unlike the 2009 under 30 free agent class the 2010 group is not nearly as deep but does have slightly better talent available at the top end. Forwards like Rick Nash and Ilya Kovalchuk will garner a lot of attention if they are still unsigned come 2010. A tier down there is some good talent with the likes of Matthew Lombardi (PHX), Rene Bourque (CGY) and Alexander Frolov (LA). On the backend this class is sorely lacking in talent with hard hitting shot blocking specialist Anton Volchenkov (OTT) and former Leaf Carlo Colaiacovo (STL) topping the list. In goal there is some good young talent with both Jonas Hiller (ANA) and Pekka Rinne (NSH) both available.
LEAF PERSPECTIVE
From the Leaf perspective this will be a free agent season with a great deal of cap space (depending on what they do in 2009) and with the cap projected to drop to it's lowest level since the system was put in place, they are positioned well to grab hometown boy Rick Nash if he is still available and wants to be a part of the rebuild in Toronto.
Look for the Leafs to bolster themselves at forward with at least some second line level talent such as Adam Burrish (CHI), Matthew Lombardi or Alexander Frolov. One can also expect Brian Burke to take a run at super pests Jordin Tootoo (NSH) and Steve Ott (DAL) to add aggression to the lineup as Burke likes his team to initiate contact. Burke may also pick up current king of the NHL fighting jungle Derek Boogaard if he can sign him at a reasonable rate.
On the back end, the Leafs may take a hard look at Anton Volchenkov but ultimately we believe they will not want to pay the price he will likely demand. They may instead look at Paul Martin (NJ) or Dan Hamhuiz (NSH) who are solid defensively and bring moderate offensive capabilities as well.
Goaltending is where we will most likely see a move by the Leafs. This is the year that Vesa Toskala's contract expires and LRT is betting on him being moved before the trade deadline in 2010. This will clear the path for a new starting netminder and either of Jonas Hiller or Pekka Rinne would be tempting young targets to backstop the team going forward.
CONCLUSION
In the end this free agent season for the Leafs will be a defining one in their rebuild. The lack of expectations that they will have had over the first 2 years will have faded and Leaf fans and management will be demanding to see some results. The team will be expected to make the playoffs consisitantly starting in 2010/2011 and having a superstar forward like a Rick Nash signed long term would go a long way to ensuring that success.
